The pearl grows and decays,
although it does not live.
It emerges in a space full of life,
and yet is unessential.
The pebble does not grow and yet decays.
It emerges in a space full of movement
and decays in a space of time
that no man can span.
Their contrast constitutes their being,
making them, together, precious.
